The universities in Nigeria can be categorised into three, according to their type of ownership.

The universities in Nigeria can be categorised into three, according to their type of ownership, as follows:

 

  • Federal – Universities that are either owned by the Federal Government or its agencies

  •  

  • State – Universities that are owned by any of the states of the federation

  •  

  • Private – Universities that are owned by private individuals or entities

As of December 2022, approvals were granted for the establishment of 221 universities categorised as follows:

  •  

  • Federal 50

  • State 60

  • Private  111

  • Total 221

In all, the National Universities Commission (NUC) is the regulatory agency for the universities and applications to establish universities are made to it.

 

In addition to the above, there are four (4) Inter-University Centers (VIEW THE LIST) established by the Federal Government, which are also member institutions of the Association of Bursars of Nigerian Universities (ABNU).
