The Association of Bursars of Nigerian Universities (ABNU) has reinvigorated its capacity building outfit, ABNU Training Institute, which it has successfully operated in close to a decade by incorporating ABNU Training Academy Limited (ATAL) in December 2021. ATAL is wholly owned by ABNU and has been accredited by the Centre for Management Development.
The transformation has led to the upscale of the capacity building initiative in order to meet the prevailing and future challenges created by the dynamism in the domestic and global environment. The predecessor of ATAL has over the past decade organized both local and overseas courses for staff of educational and non-educational tertiary institutions in Nigeria through its formidable ties with local and internationally acclaimed and renown resource persons.
Apart from its scheduled annual course programme, ATAL equally partners with institutions to provide needs-based in-plant training to address the skills and knowledge gaps in specific areas. This approach facilitates broader participation for staff of such institutions.
ATAL also has a window of collaboration with other reputable agencies and consulting firms in organising training in areas of contemporary relevance. The most recent such initiative is the collaborative training on ‘Resource Mobilisation and International Funding for Sustainable Development in Educational Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria’ being organised for Administrators of Tertiary institutions in collaboration with the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru, Jos.

The Board of Trustees of ATAL comprise of the following persons of impeccable integrity who have excelled in their respective careers and professional endeavours:
ALHAJI ISA RHUME YUSUF
He was awarded the degrees of B.Sc. Accountancy in March 1986 and M.Sc. Finance in May 2002 by the Universities of Maiduguri and Calabar respectively. He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, a Certified Forensic Accountant of Nigeria and has the Institute’s certificate of proficiency in International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
He was Accountant with the old Borno State (now Borno and Yobe States) Ministry of Finance from 1987 to 1989. During that period, he worked in the Government Sub-Treasury in Maiduguri and later established the Accounts Department of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Maiduguri in 1988.
He joined the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1989 as a Senior Supervisor and rose through the ranks to the position of Director before he voluntarily retired in April 2017. During his 28 years sojourn in the CBN, he worked as a bank supervisor, regulator and policy maker. He also worked in the Operations Department of the Bank. He was at various times the relationship manager of various banks in Nigeria. He was an instructor in the CBN Training School. He had trained bank examiners from various regulatory agencies in Nigeria and other West African countries.
He was Lead Resident Examiner to Unity Bank. He also headed for 7 years, the Secretariat of the Financial Services Regulation Coordinating Committee (FSRCC) – a statutory committee comprising of all the CEOs of the financial regulatory agencies in Nigeria (CBN, NDIC, CAC, FMF, SEC, PenCom, NAICOM, NCX, FIRS). The Committee is vested with the responsibility of ensuring the safety, soundness and stability of the Nigerian financial system.
He has extensive training in banks and other financial institutions’ supervision and regulation from Bank Negara, Malaysia, the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States of America. Alh. I.R. Yusuf was the maiden Bursar of the Nigerian Army University Biu. He not only set up the Bursary Department but also contributed in the set up and birthing of the University. He served as Bursar from 23rd May 2018 to 28th January 2021.
DR. VICTOR USUNOBUN IMAGBE Ph.D, FCNA, FCTI, FCIFIA, CPA
Dr. Victor Usunobun IMAGBE, was born in the sixties to the humble family of Chief Samson ImagbeIyamu of Iguatakpa Village in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo state.
He started his educational career as a little boy at the Obe Primary School, Iguogun-Iguatakpa, Edo State in 1971. He attended Okada Grammar School, Okada, Edo State (1979-1983), College of Education, Warri, Delta State (1984-1987) where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC), West African School Certificate(WASC/GCE) and NCE (Business Education with Distinction respectively. He further proceeded to the University of Benin, Benin-City, Edo State (1989-1991) where he got his B.Ed. (Social Science and thereafter proceeded to the Nigerian College of Accountancy, Jos (2007-2009) and obtained a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Accounting. His further quest for education led him to Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State (2013-2015) where he bagged a B.Sc. (First Class Honors) Degree in Accounting (Forensic Accounting Option). His deep thirst for education propelled him to enroll for a Masters degree at the Igbinedion University Okada (2012-2013) where he bagged Masters Degree in Accounting.
In 2014, Dr. Victor U. Imagbe continued in the same Igbinedion University for a doctorate degree in accounting which he successfully defended and was meritoriously awarded a Ph.D. in Accounting in year 2018.

WORK EXPERIENCE/TRAINING
Dr. Victor U. Imagbe started his working career in 1995 as an Accountant with the Edo State Primary Education Board under the Edo State Civil Service. By dint of hard work, he grew through the ranks, earned his promotions as and when due. By September 2011, he was elevated to the position of Chief Accountant after about 16years of service.
He thereafter left the services of Edo State Civil Service to join the services of the University of Benin in 2011 as Deputy Bursar (Investments and Commercial Operations, 2011-2012), and also served as Deputy Bursar (Salaries, Wages and Pension, 2013-July 2018) in the University.
In 2017 due to his hardwork, diligence, honesty, sound professional knowledge and managerial capabilities, he was appointed the first Managing Director, University of Benin Microfinance Bank Ltd; charged with the responsibility of overseeing the efficient management of the bank by evaluating the Risk management policy among other responsibilities. He still holds the position as at date.
In 2018, Dr. Victor Imagbe, FCNA, was appointed Bursar/CFO, University of Benin, after a rigorous and thorough selection process. As Chief Finance Officer he is responsible to the Vice Chancellor for the day-to-day administration and financial controls of the affairs of the University a position he also holds as at date.

MR. CHIDI PIUS AWAGU
He is a Chartered Accountant with over 38 years post qualification experience.
He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants-UK (FCCA), Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) and Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (FCIT).
In 2010, he attended the Advanced Management Programme (AMP) at the Lagos Business School. He worked with Panell Kerr Foster (Chartered Accountants), Akintola Williams Deliotte (Chartered Accountants), Associated Finance Company Ltd and Chidi Awagu & Co (Chartered Accountants) before joining Pan-Atlantic University in January 2009 as a Finance Manager.
In January 2010, he was appointed the Bursar of the University, a position he occupied till June 2021, when he retired. He is currently the Head of Internal Audit and Compliance department in Pan-Atlantic University.
AISHA IFERE (MRS)
Mrs. Ifere is the Managing Partner with Cosnia Classic Consultancy Limited (CCCL).
Her work experience traverses the nooks and crannies of Finance & Accounts Units in Academic institutions before becoming the Finance Director of National Universities Commission (NUC), the regulatory body of Universities in Nigeria.
As Finance Director, she was responsible for managing the Commission’s funds, collating and defending budgets on behalf of Universities and the Commission at various levels of defense with the Federal Government.
She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) and holds an M.Sc. in Corporate Governance from Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds UK. She has headed the ABNU Secretariat since inception.
